Mission statement

We aim to provide a highest standard of acute care, chronic disease management and to screen for medically and socially important diseases while encouraging positive health beliefs. We strive to be accessible and friendly to the population we serve, while fostering the personal motivations of the practice team

Premises

We practice from recently extended and refurbished buildings. Funding was provided by a grant for university teaching and via the National Health Service notional rent scheme. Ownership of the building is shared amongst the partners.

Patients' services

We run a comprehensive appointments system, offering ten minute slots.  In addition we offer same day  five minute slots for urgent appointments. The system was developed by the whole practice team with the intention of maximising availability of both acute and chronic services and minimizing stress for the team.

Disease management sessions are available to patients with asthma, diabetes, hypertension, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. We also offer child health, smoking cessation and minor surgery services. We offer advice on female health, teenage sexual health, birth control,  menopause. Counsellors and alcohol workers also hold sessions.

A COMPREHENSIVE PRACTICE LEAFLET IS AVAILABLE - ASK AT RECEPTION

There is a drop-in sexual health clinic on Monday run by Dr Anjana Ranjit and Sister Jenny Quddus-Hughes.

In addition, advice on contraceptive services is provided by all Doctors and Nurses.

Patients do NOT need to be registered with our practice to receive contraceptive advice and prescriptions for contraception and supplies of condoms. These services are FREE and CONFIDENTIAL.

In house meetings

The we hold monthly meetings with health visitors and community nurses.  We maintain a close working relationship with all the community services locally. We believe that these clinical meetings are important to the quality of service we provide.

Staff training and liaison

We run regular practice meetings with everybody in attendance and clinical meetings with doctors and nurses. 2-3 times each year we have closed the practice for half a day to run in-house training sessions on topics including: New medical developments, computer skills and policy development.

Undergraduate and general practice training

We have been training registrars (qualified doctors) for many years and we have four approved trainers, we regard training as a practice activity. We generally have one full time registrar in post but sometimes have a second who may be with us for two years working half-time.

We have a large commitment to undergraduate teaching with students from all five years of medical school attending during university term time and very often final year students attending in blocks of eight weeks throughout the year.

Information Technology

We currently use the TPP System One clinical system (hosted) which runs on a Windows network; operating approximately 25 PC terminals all of which are linked to NHS network (N3) as well as a practice Intranet site.  All patient information is stored in the clinical system which is held on secure cloud servers with the clinical system supplier. Some data is held on the local network and servers.  Confidentiality is maintained at all times and patient's rights are protected under the Data Protection Act.

Primary Care Organisation

We are a part of the Birmingham Cross City Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG). Dr Gillis De Wildt is the clinical governance lead for the practice.

Research

Individual partners are involved in research to greater or lesser degrees, while the whole practice is part of a GP research syndicate, MIDREC.

MIDREC offers a research partnership between GPs and Birmingham University Academic Unit. We anticipate this activity growing in the future.
